Is Universal Mardi Gras Worth It? My Solo Visit, Parade Float Experience & Food Guide to Universal Studios Florida’s Carnaval Event

Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras celebration has been on my theme park bucket list for years—but I finally experienced Universal Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval for the first time on a recent solo trip to Universal Studios Florida. If you’ve ever wondered “Is Universal Mardi Gras worth it?” the short answer is yes—but there’s a lot more to the event than just catching beads at the parade. From global food booths and themed drinks to a lively nighttime parade, free concerts, and even the chance to ride on a parade float and throw beads yourself, Universal transforms the park into a vibrant carnival celebration. Visiting solo gave me the freedom to sample food at my own pace, explore the Tribute Store, and take in the incredible music and fun performances without a strict schedule. In this guide, I’ll walk through everything you need to know about Universal Mardi Gras at Universal Studios Florida—including the food I tried, how the food and drink card can save you money, what the crowds were like, and what it was really like to participate in the Ride and Dine parade float experience. If you’re planning a trip—or considering a solo theme park adventure—this event might just be one of the most fun times of year to visit Universal Orlando. 🎭🎢

What Is Universal Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval?

Every spring, Universal Studios Florida throws a Mardi Gras party that’s part food festival, part parade, and entirely chaotic fun.

Universal Mardi Gras takes over Universal Studios Florida every spring.

It’s called Universal Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval, and it blends New Orleans traditions with Carnaval celebrations worldwide.

Even better? The event is included with your regular park ticket. Yes, seriously. No extra event ticket required.

You get Universal Mardi Gras food booths, a massive nighttime parade, themed merchandise, and live concerts on select nights. It’s basically Universal’s way of saying, “Here, have a party. Also buy snacks.”

The International Flavors of Carnaval booths serve small plates inspired by celebrations around the world.

As a solo traveler, this event surprised me in the best way. Food booths mean small plates, which makes it ridiculously easy to snack your way around the park. And trust me, I took that challenge personally.

This was my first time visiting Universal Mardi Gras, and it is absolutely a seasonal event I will check out again. There’s something fun happening around almost every corner. Music. Performers. Beads flying through the air. Honestly, the energy feels closer to a street festival than a theme park event. If you like theme parks, food festivals, and mild bead-related chaos, the Universal Studios Florida Mardi Gras event is absolutely worth experiencing.

Universal Mardi Gras 2026 Dates and Basic Event Information

Universal Orlando loves a seasonal party, and Mardi Gras might be the most chaotic one yet.

The Universal Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval runs now through April 4 at Universal Studios Florida. The best part? The event is included with your regular park ticket. Annual passholders can join the fun too, assuming their pass allows entry that day.

Weekend nights also feature live concerts, and those are included with park admission. Yes, actual concerts. No extra charge.

Food booths, specialty drinks, and event merchandise do cost extra. Because, of course they do. Universal also sells a food and beverage card, which can save money if you plan to snack a lot. More on that strategy later.

Since I visited solo, I could wander the festival at my own pace. No group debates about what booth to try next. No negotiating over who wants tacos versus noodles. I tried snacks, sampled drinks, and browsed merchandise without anyone rushing me along.

I also spent extra time inside the Mardi Gras Tribute Store, which is basically an attraction itself.

Universal Mardi Gras street performers

Throughout the day, smaller musical performers pop up around the park. They add to the festival atmosphere and make the park feel surprisingly lively.

Every night ends with the Universal Mardi Gras parade. And yes, it gets crowded. If catching beads is your goal, stake out a parade spot early. Otherwise, you’ll be watching beads fly everywhere but towards you.

Make sure you download the Universal Orlando Resort app before your visit so you know park hours the day of your visit, show and parade times, and you can view the full Mardi Gras park map. I also have a blog post about everything we know about this year’s festival here.

The Food Booths: International Flavors of Carnaval

One of the biggest reasons people visit Universal Mardi Gras is the food. And honestly, I get it. The event is basically a theme park version of a global food festival.

Festival-style food booths are scattered throughout Universal Studios Florida, with several clustered near the Jimmy Fallon ride. You’ll find more booths around New York, the park entrance, and along the lagoon, with two way in the back near the amphitheater.

Food booths and menus are scattered around the park, with several near the New York area.

Each booth represents a country or city that celebrates Carnaval. The menus reflect those locations with dishes inspired by global festival traditions.

Everything is served as small plates, which makes it easy to try multiple dishes. Or at least that’s the theory. Each booth also offers specialty drinks, cocktails, and sometimes themed beers or ciders. So technically, you could snack and sip your way around the park all day. And plenty of people absolutely do.

Because daytime crowds were manageable, I rarely waited long at any booth. That makes food hopping surprisingly easy. Unless you’re visiting solo like I was. Then the challenge becomes eating enough without rolling yourself out of the park. Turns out small plates add up quickly.

My Favorite Dish: Verlasso “Fire” Salmon

My favorite dish of the day came from the Chile Patagonia booth.

Verlasso Fire salmon Chile Patagonia booth Universal Mardi Gras
The Verlasso “Fire” salmon from the Chile Patagonia booth was easily my favorite dish.

The Verlasso “Fire” salmon was absolutely incredible. It was smoky, tender, and perfectly cooked. But the real star was the fresh herb salsa. It added brightness and flavor that made the whole dish pop. Honestly, I would order this again without hesitation.

You Can’t Skip the Beignets

Of course, I also had to stop at Taste of the Quarter. Because you simply cannot attend a Mardi Gras event without eating beignets. That feels illegal.

The beignets were hot, fluffy, and generously covered in powdered sugar. In other words, exactly what you want from a proper beignet. They were messy, sweet, and completely worth the powdered sugar explosion.

The Worst Thing I Tried

Not everything was a winner.

My least favorite item was the King Cake Hard Cider from the Beer Garden.

I wanted to like it. I really did. Unfortunately, it tasted like cleaning detergent mixed with a donut.

I took two sips and immediately threw it away.

Sometimes we make sacrifices in the name of research.

Why Food Booths Are Easy to Explore During the Day

One advantage of visiting during the day is lighter crowds. Lines at the booths moved quickly most of the afternoon. That makes it easy to wander between booths and try different dishes.

But as a solo traveler, pacing becomes important. Because eventually you realize you are very, very full. And there are still six booths you haven’t tried yet. As a person with a tiny tummy (thanks, gastric sleeve!), it’s difficult for me to consume large amounts of food in a certain time frame. ESPECIALLY when it’s hot outside. So I had to really work at alternating food with drinks, and not overdoing it when I felt food. Which is VERY difficult around so many tasty looking treats.

Where to See the Full Universal Mardi Gras Menu

Universal updates the festival menus every year. You can check the full Mardi Gras food booth menu on the official event page. I also shared the menu earlier in my What We Know So Far about Universal Mardi Gras post. Both are helpful if you want to plan your snack strategy before visiting.

The Mardi Gras Food & Beverage Card (And Why It’s Worth It)

Universal Mardi Gras food and beverage card sign

If you plan to try any of the food and drink booths, the Mardi Gras Food & Beverage Card is worth considering. Think of it as a prepaid snack strategy.

Universal sells two main versions of the card. The standard card costs $65 and comes loaded with $75. That’s basically 10 free dollars for food. Annual Passholders get an even better deal. UOAP holders can buy a $150 card for $120. That’s 30 extra dollars in festival food credit.

The card works at all Mardi Gras food booths, including alcoholic drinks. Yes, cocktails and beer count. Which makes the card even more useful.

Stacking Discounts (Sometimes)

If you’re a Universal Orlando Annual Passholder, you can still apply your food discount. The passholder discount works on food, not alcohol. The booth applies the discount first. Then you pay the remaining balance using the food card.

Universal Visa cardholders may also receive a 10 percent food discount. And yes, you can still pay using the food card. At least in theory. In practice, it worked about half the time. Some booths applied the discount without hesitation. Others insisted I actually pay with the Visa card. Theme park logic can be mysterious.

Still, when the discounts work, you’re stacking savings on top of free credit. That’s a pretty solid deal.

The Card Works Like Cash

The food card functions just like cash. Which means you should not lose it. Or drop it somewhere near a parade crowd. Because anyone who finds it could technically use it.

The upside is that the card is shareable. Families or groups can easily split one card.

It also works outside the festival booths. You can use it at Universal Orlando restaurants, including locations in other parks. Most restaurants in CityWalk also accept it.

Even better, the balance never expires. If you don’t spend it all this trip, save it for later. I actually used the remainder of mine a few days later. Specifically during my visit to Epic Universe. Future snacks funded by past snacks!

Why It Still Made Sense for Me as a Solo Traveler

Even traveling solo, the card made sense for me. I used a little over half during my Mardi Gras food rounds. The rest covered meals later in my trip.

That flexibility makes the card surprisingly valuable. And it makes trying multiple booths a lot easier. Because mentally, it feels like you’re spending festival credits. Not actual money.

Where to Buy the Food & Beverage Card

You can purchase a card right after entering Universal Studios Florida. Several Mardi Gras food booths also sell them throughout the park.

If you plan to snack around the festival, it’s an easy upgrade. And since these are only sold during the Mardi Gras festival, it really adds value to this event.

Crowd Levels and the Best Time to Visit

If you prefer lower crowds, early Mardi Gras season is the sweet spot.

Attendance across Universal Orlando tends to dip in February and early March. Holiday weekends are the obvious exception. Otherwise, daytime crowds are surprisingly manageable.

During the day, the park feels relaxed and easy to navigate. Food booth lines move quickly. Ride wait times stay reasonable. It’s a great time to snack your way around the park.

As evening approaches, the energy shifts. Crowds grow as people arrive for the Mardi Gras parade and weekend concerts. The parade usually rolls directly into the concert. That means a large portion of the park gathers in one area.

Food booths typically close about an hour before park closing. So it’s best to hit most of the booths before the parade begins. Trust me, future you will appreciate the planning.

Weekdays without concerts are even calmer. The park stays quiet most of the day. Once the parade ends, many guests leave quickly. Which means shorter ride lines and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Why Solo Travelers Have an Advantage

Visiting solo actually makes Mardi Gras easier to navigate.

One person can move between booths much faster than a group. Single rider lines also help reduce ride wait times. And finding a parade viewing spot is simpler when you only need space for one.

Sometimes solo travel really does have perks.

The Mardi Gras Tribute Store

The Mardi Gras Tribute Store is located near Mel’s Drive-In in the Hollywood section of the park. Compared to previous HHN Tribute Stores it’s not huge, but the atmosphere inside is fantastic.

Colorful decorations, festive lighting, and Mardi Gras details fill every corner. It feels less like a store and more like a mini attraction. And yes, you will probably stop for photos.

At the end of the store, there’s even a giant throne. Naturally, it’s perfect for dramatic Mardi Gras photo ops.

The store also sells exclusive event merchandise. Some items are only available inside the Tribute Store. Which means you might find things here missing from the regular gift shops.

There are also a few themed snacks and treats available. Because apparently Universal thinks we should keep eating.

I stopped in mainly to cool off and look around. But it ended up being one of the more fun stops of the day. If you want a closer look, be sure you check out my full visit to Mardi Gras on my YouTube channel.

The Free Mardi Gras Concert Series

Another major part of Universal Mardi Gras is the free concert series.

Concerts happen on select nights throughout the festival. Best of all, they’re included with regular park admission. No extra ticket required.

The concerts take place at the Music Plaza Stage near the front of the park. It’s the same stage used for other Universal events and seasonal shows. The venue isn’t huge. In fact, it fills up quickly. I’ve seen concerts here during previous visits. The grassy viewing area usually fills all the way back to the park walkway. So if you want a good spot, plan to arrive early. Very early on popular nights.

Universal promoted the 2026 lineup as “big name acts.” That might be a generous description in some cases. Many artists fall into the “festival nostalgia tour” category. Which honestly still makes for a fun night. Even if you haven’t listened to them since the early 2000s.

There was no concert the day I visited. So I can’t personally report on the crowds this year. But based on past events, the shows tend to draw big audiences. Especially Orlando-area locals. If you’re visiting on a concert night, expect the park to feel busier.

You can see the full concert lineup on my previous Mardi Gras post here.

The Universal Mardi Gras Parade

The Universal Mardi Gras parade is easily one of the highlights of the entire event. And honestly, it’s an absolute blast.

Every float is covered in colorful lights and decorations. Many designs are inspired by global Carnaval traditions and classic Mardi Gras themes. At night, the glowing floats look especially impressive.

Colorful floats light up the Universal Mardi Gras parade each night.

Street performers and dancers lead the parade down the route. They keep the crowd energized while the floats roll past.

And then there are the beads. So. Many. Beads. Every float carries guests tossing necklaces into the crowd. Buckets and buckets of beads.

Now keep in mind, this is a family-friendly Mardi Gras. You get beads simply by cheering loudly. No questionable behavior required. That’s the kind of stuff that gets you permanently removed from the park…

Tips for Catching Beads

The parade route gets crowded quickly. If your group has more than one or two people, claim a viewing spot early. Check the Universal Orlando Resort app for that night’s parade time. The app also shows the parade route. You can also find the parade route in my earlier blog post.

Once you know the route, look for a straight section of the street. Corners can be tricky for catching beads. If a float turns away from you, throws become much harder.

Translation: fewer beads.

When the floats approach, get loud. Wave your arms. Make as much noise as possible.

Beads are thrown from both sides of every float. So there’s usually plenty to go around.

Riding a Mardi Gras Float: My Ride and Dine Experience

Watching the parade is fun.

Riding on a float and throwing beads is unforgettable.

Universal offers this experience through the Ride and Dine add-on ticket. The package includes a three-course meal and non-alcoholic drink at select Universal restaurants. It also guarantees a reserved spot riding on a parade float.

Important detail: this is an add-on ticket. You still need regular park admission to enter Universal Studios Florida.

Ride and Dine tickets usually start around $95 per person. Universal Orlando Annual Passholders can reserve float rider spots only online. That option skips the restaurant portion.

I shared the full restaurant list in my earlier What We Know About Mardi Gras post. I can also help you with Ride & Dine ticket availability and pricing if you contact me here!

Checking In for Your Float

Check-in happens near the Animal Actors entrance in the Hollywood section of the park. Arrive between two hours and 45 minutes before parade time. Yes, they are serious about that window.

First, you sign a quick online waiver. Then you receive a wristband identifying your assigned float. That wristband also determines your Krewe Costume. The costume is a simple themed tunic. It slips over your clothes and takes about five seconds to put on. Nothing elaborate, but it adds to the fun.

I was on the Jester float, so the sash on my tunic had little jester hats on it. Very festive.

Boarding the Parade Float

Once dressed, riders gather in seating areas organized by float. You’ll listen to a few safety briefings while waiting. Then your float leader escorts the group backstage into the Universal backlot.

Unfortunately, photos and videos are not allowed backstage. So you’ll have to imagine the behind-the-scenes chaos.

Eventually you climb aboard your assigned float. Each float has multiple rows for guests on both sides. And yes, you will stand the entire time. From staging to parade finish, expect about 90 minutes on your feet.

Throwing Beads During the Parade

Once the parade begins, the energy completely changes. Suddenly you’re a rock star surrounded by cheering crowds and flashing lights.

Hooks in front of you hold dozens of bead necklaces. Float leaders walk through occasionally refilling the hooks. So you rarely run out.

There is one important rule. All throws must be underhand or sideways. Absolutely no overhand throws allowed. They enforce that rule very seriously.

What It Feels Like to Ride the Float

Honestly, the energy is incredible. The crowd is completely into it. Everyone is yelling for beads and waving their arms. Music plays along the entire parade route. So the excitement never really slows down.

I got so focused on throwing beads that I lost track of everything. I had no idea where we were on the route. Or even what direction we were facing. Time flew by.

Even riding solo, I never felt out of place. Everyone around me was friendly and excited to be there. Many float riders were locals who do this every year. They happily shared tips and stories during the ride. It turned into a surprisingly social experience. And you know I don’t like social… But yes, I would absolutely do it again. It was a total adrenaline rush.

Is Universal Mardi Gras Worth It? My Honest Thoughts

Short answer: yes. Universal Mardi Gras is absolutely worth experiencing.

The event happens during one of the best times of year to visit. Weather is comfortable. Crowds are typically lower than peak seasons. That combination already makes a trip more enjoyable.

Then you add the festival atmosphere. The food booths alone make the event fun to explore. Sampling dishes from around the world turns the park into a global food festival. Specialty drinks are themed, creative, and perfect for sipping your way around the park.

The Mardi Gras parade is another major highlight. Watching it is exciting. Riding on a float is even better.

And the best part? Most of the event is included with regular park admission. You get festival food booths, entertainment, and a nightly parade without paying extra. Even the concerts are free. That’s pretty rare in theme park land.

The food and beverage card adds even more value. You get bonus credit just for buying the card. Stack a discount or two, and the savings get even better.

This was my first visit to Universal Mardi Gras, and it exceeded expectations. I met fun people. I ate a ridiculous amount of international food. And I had an amazing time wandering the festival solo.

Needless to say, I will absolutely be back.

Planning Your Own Universal Mardi Gras Trip

If you’re thinking about visiting Universal Mardi Gras, a little planning goes a long way.

Weekdays are usually the least crowded. Early in the festival season is also quieter than later dates. Holiday weekends and spring break bring larger crowds.

Concert nights attract the biggest evening crowds. If you want a good concert spot, arrive at the Music Plaza Stage early. The grassy viewing area fills quickly.

For the food booths, visit during the afternoon. Lines stay shorter before the parade crowds arrive.

And if riding a parade float sounds fun, book that experience early. Float spots can sell out.
