Flying after May 7, 2025? Make sure you’re REAL ID ready!

The REAL ID deadline is rapidly approaching, so if you have a domestic flight booked for May 7, 2025 or after and want to actually get through TSA, there are several important things you need to be aware of.

What is REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act passed Congress in 2005 in an effort to create stricter regulations for those wanting to:

  • Access certain federal facilities
  • Board Federally regulated commercial aircraft
  • Enter nuclear power plants

What Does This Mean for You?

Beginning May 7, 2025, anyone 18 years and older who wants to board a domestic flight MUST present a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification. Consequently, when you walk up to the TSA line, you’ll have to present a license that has the REAL ID compliant star marking on it.

Enhanced Driver’s Licenses are also acceptable, even though they won’t have the star marking on them. EDL’s issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington will work. Likewise, you can show a valid passport.

All states, the District of Columbia and all five territories are issuing REAL ID compliant licenses and IDs. To make sure yours is compliant visit the “Are you REAL ID ready” page on the DHS website.

A passport isn’t the only alternative option. TSA has put together more information on all the acceptable forms of identification you can use to board an aircraft, so be sure to check out the full list before you head to the airport.

Keep in mind, the REAL ID is ONLY good for domestic flights. REAL ID won’t help you cross the Canada or Mexico border and can’t be used for international cruise travel. If you are trying to board an international flight, you still MUST have a valid passport. If you are trying to board a domestic flight, you only need one or the other.

Make sure you are ready by the REAL ID deadline! No one wants to get stuck at the TSA entrance and possibly turned away from a flight taking them to their next epic adventure, so don’t put this off. And share this article to make sure your friends and family are ready too!
